Why are spaces opening up between my Vancouver deck boards?

Question

Why are spaces opening up between my Vancouver deck boards?

Answer from Deck IQ

Deck board gaps opening up is completely normal and expected in Metro Vancouver's climate — it's primarily caused by wood shrinkage as lumber dries out after installation, combined with seasonal moisture changes from our wet winters and drier summers.

Wood decking boards are typically installed with moisture content between 15-19%, but they naturally dry to 8-12% moisture content in service. As the wood loses moisture, it shrinks primarily across the grain (width of the board), creating gaps between boards. This process is most dramatic in the first 12-18 months after installation, which is why many contractors recommend waiting a full year before addressing any gap concerns.

Cedar and pressure-treated lumber are particularly prone to gap formation because they're often installed at higher moisture content. Western red cedar, our most popular local decking material, can shrink significantly as it acclimates to Vancouver's seasonal moisture cycles. Even kiln-dried lumber will continue to move with seasonal changes — expanding slightly during our wet October-March period and contracting during summer dry spells.

Seasonal moisture cycles in Metro Vancouver amplify this movement. Our marine climate means wood absorbs moisture during the rainy season (causing slight expansion) and releases it during summer (causing contraction). This annual cycle means gaps may appear larger in late summer/early fall and smaller after months of winter rain. North-facing decks that receive less direct sunlight tend to maintain higher moisture content and show less dramatic gap formation than south-facing decks.

Normal gap sizes range from 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch between boards after the wood has fully dried and stabilized. Gaps larger than 1/4 inch may indicate the boards were installed too tightly initially, preventing normal expansion, or that the lumber had unusually high moisture content at installation. Very wide gaps (over 3/8 inch) can become problematic for furniture stability and safety, especially if high heels or chair legs can catch in the gaps.

When gaps become problematic: If gaps exceed 1/4 inch consistently, or if they're causing furniture wobbling or safety concerns, you may need to add additional boards to fill the space. Some contractors will return after the first year to assess gap formation and add infill boards if necessary — this should be discussed during the initial contract negotiation.

Composite decking experiences minimal gap changes because the wood fiber/plastic blend is dimensionally stable. However, composite boards still require proper initial spacing (typically 1/8 inch) to allow for thermal expansion and contraction — composite expands and contracts with temperature rather than moisture.

Prevention strategies include specifying kiln-dried lumber (though it costs more), installing boards with appropriate initial gaps (1/8 inch for green lumber, 1/16 inch for kiln-dried), and ensuring proper ventilation under the deck to promote even drying. However, some gap formation is inevitable and normal with natural wood products.
