Pressure-treated (PT) lumber remains the most widely used and budget-friendly decking material in Metro Vancouver, offering solid structural performance and reasonable longevity at the lowest installed cost per square foot of any decking option.

Pressure treatment involves forcing chemical preservatives — primarily micronized copper azole (MCA) or alkaline copper quaternary (ACQ) — deep into the wood fibres under high pressure in an industrial retort, creating a decay-resistant and insect-resistant product that significantly outlasts untreated lumber in exterior applications.

All structural connections must use hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel hardware — standard zinc-plated fasteners and hangers corrode rapidly when in contact with the copper-based preservatives in modern PT lumber.
