Western red cedar costs more in Metro Vancouver than you might expect — typically $45-$85 per sq ft installed — primarily because of local labour rates, material grade premiums, and the additional preparation and finishing work required by the climate.

The irony is that BC is one of the world's largest producers of western red cedar. The trees grow in our own backyard, yet cedar decking in Vancouver is not cheap. The disconnect comes from a few compounding factors.

Labour is the biggest driver. Metro Vancouver has some of the highest construction labour costs in Canada — deck builders here typically charge $25-$45 per hour, running 15-25% above the national average. That labour premium reflects the region's cost of living, WorkSafeBC overhead, and strong demand for experienced tradespeople. Labour typically accounts for 40-60% of a finished deck's total cost, so even if the cedar boards themselves were free, the project would still be expensive.

Much of the region's housing stock sits on sloped terrain, so elevated or hillside cedar decks are the norm rather than the exception.

One practical note on value: cedar's upfront cost is lower than composite, but the lifetime cost equation depends heavily on maintenance. In Metro Vancouver's wet climate, cedar needs cleaning and re-staining with a penetrating semi-transparent stain or oil every 1-2 years. Skipping that maintenance accelerates greying, surface checking, and eventually structural decay. Factor in $300-$600 every couple of years for DIY maintenance, or $800-$1,500 for professional staining, when comparing cedar to a composite deck that only needs periodic cleaning.
